In addition to communication, social, behavioural and learning challenges, many children with autism have fine motor, oral motor and eating issues and must be methodically taught the daily living skills that typically developing children naturally learn.
With a generous grant from The Shayam Kaushal Charitable Foundation, our renovated kitchen/life skills room has enhanced our ability to teach these essential skills to the children with autism we serve.
Our teachers and therapists are busy building our children’s daily living skills by learning and practising:
- simple meal preparation
- basic kitchen and laundry skills
- eating skills: cutting food, using utensils, plates and napkins
- table manners and social skills
- oral motor strategies for promoting expansion of food choices, functional chewing and swallowing
