Making a difference with technology
Tablets, computers and SMART Boards are just some of the tools that our team here at Giant Steps use with every child to build critical developmental skills and foster communication and learning.
Speech and communication disorders are one of the primary challenges experienced by children with ASD and a focus of each child’s therapy plan. Under the direction of our Speech and Language Pathologist, we use a variety and combination of strategies and tools including speech and voice output therapy, iPads, augmentative communication devices, sign language and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System). With Proloquo2go software and its voice output feature, many of our kids use iPads as expressive tools, enabling them to communicate their wants and needs, make choices and greet others.
With thousands of apps, unlimited academic and skill development activities are a finger swipe away. Our therapists and program assistants use them to teach and practice math, literacy and social skills, to focus a child’s attention and reinforce positive behaviours, and for data collection. Scheduling and timing apps help ease the transition and anxiety issues children often experience moving to a new activity or setting. Our kids often have journals on their iPads, enabling them to share what has happened in different settings.
In addition to iPads, our kids and staff use SMART Boards, laptop and touchscreen computers, and other tablets throughout their day.
We are grateful to the kindness of these generous donors who have made significant grants for technology and resources here at Giant Steps.
