Giant Steps’ academic program is overseen and delivered by our Special Education teachers from the York Region District School Board.
Using the Ontario Curriculum Document, our teachers complete thorough academic assessments on each child. Goals that focus on functional academic growth and development are defined, and in consultation with the full Giant Steps team, the family and community professionals, Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are developed for each child.
Goals and strategies from academics and our 3 core therapy programs are integrated into each child’s IEP, and are monitored and modified based on daily data collection and analysis. Our Program Assistants work closely with our teachers to support every student, and goals are worked on in group and one-on-one teaching settings. Technology such as SMART Boards and iPads are used extensively as teaching and communication tools.
In our students’ local schools, Giant Steps’ teachers play a pivotal role in facilitating our students’ integration, working with their teachers there to provide educational strategies, modify approaches to learning and maximize their inclusion with typically developing peers.
